Now is the time to remove any unsightly and unwanted plants. Once the beds have been cleared, make sure that they are designed and curved, or straightened to your satisfaction.
Now is also when one can close up the flower bed borders that the gardener or garden service enlarged over the past year.
Gecko lawns and landscapes supply and install cobble edging. We supply the 100mm X 100mm or the 150mm X 150mm cobbles. They come in cream sandstone, grey and light terracotta. Our cobble edging can turn an ordinary garden into an outstanding garden. At the same time, the edging prevents grass from growing into your flower beds.
SOIL:
Once the beds and borders are sorted, you can start aerating and feeding the soil. Start by loosening the soil in the flower beds.
The main components of soil are water, air, living organisms, organic matter and mineral particles. Improve the quality of your soil by adding in compost from your compost heap now.
Should you have a clay based soil you can start by adding in some river sand and compost to try break down the clay. It is a good idea to loosen and mix in the above at least 200 – 300mm deep as it does tend to sink down into the clay. This will help break down the clay, and at the same time help aerate the soil.
Should you need to increase the pH in your soil, or lower the acidity, you will need to add nutrients to feed the plants. Dolomite lime is perfect it is a good source of calcium and magnesium. Lime is very inexpensive and can be spread approximately 5kg over 12m2.
Getting the soil ready for spring will help you get off to a good early and happy spring!
