Weeding your flowerbeds, lawn and paving

How to get rid of weeds in your flowerbeds:

You need to be careful not to contaminate the soil by spraying any herbicides, as any plants and seedlings in the soil would also die as a result. So the suggested method is to dig the weeds out and then spread a layer of mulch over the soil.

The mulch keeps the seeds from coming into contact with the soil and keeps the sunlight from reaching the seeds already in the soil to prevent them from sprouting. You can also put layers of newspaper under the mulch as an extra precaution. Just before laying the paper down water the soil very well and then water the paper again. Spread the mulch over the paper. Mulch also helps to retain moisture and helps to enrich your soil.

How to get rid of weeds in your lawn:

There are Herbicides specifically for broad leaf weeds found in lawn which you can buy from your local nursery. Make sure that you don’t spray this onto your lawn on a windy day, as the herbicide can be blown onto plants and kill them.

If you would like to eradicate weeds and still protect Mother Nature, as it now is believed that all the herbicides and insecticides are one of the key players in killing the bees and other insects. The best organic way is to pour a stream of boiling water carefully on the crown of each weed. Tough weeds with long taproots may need two or three applications to ensure that they are destroyed.

How to get rid of weeds in your paving:

Other than using a herbicide from your local nursery, that unfortunately causes exceptional harm to nature, you can use a homemade spray made up of vinegar and a bit of dishwashing liquid.

The dishwashing liquid acts as a sticking agent. Spray early in the morning, on a sunny day, as the sun activates the killing properties in the vinegar. You may need to spray the area at least twice to make sure that all weeds have been covered.
Please be careful where you spray as the vinegar will not only kill the weeks but it can also kill your plants, so again be careful not to spray on a windy day.
